Dr. Binyam Tilahun

Dr. Binyam Tilahun is a distinguished leader in the field of Health Informatics, currently serving as the head of eHealthLab Ethiopia and an Associate Professor of Health Information Systems at the University of Gondar. With over 12 years of experience, he has worked on impactful global health informatics projects focused on eHealth, mHealth, and Big Health Data, securing funding from prestigious organizations such as WHO, BMGF, EU, and more.
His projects center around national-level capacity building and technical assistance, emphasizing sustainable health information systems and community-based innovations. Dr. Tilahun’s vision aims to enhance clinical services and strengthen health systems in remote Ethiopian settings through low-cost, scalable digital health solutions.
Having completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Tilahun contributed to a significant mHealth implementation science research project funded by CIHR, identifying barriers and facilitators in North America and Africa. His educational background includes a PhD in Medical Informatics from the University of Münster, Germany, and two master’s degrees in Public Health and Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.
Dr. Tilahun is dedicated to capacity building and has also pioneered the first PhD in Public Health Informatics program in Africa, with three fellows enrolled.
He is currently the Treasurer at The Pan African Health Informatics Association (HELINA)
